Everything you might ask
WhoKnowsNan is a quiz show about one person, made from what the family remembers about her and played on your TV. Here’s how it all works.
The usual questions
Do we need to download anything?
No. Open the game in the browser on your TV, laptop or tablet, and everyone joins on their phone by scanning the code.
Can Nan play too?
Yes. Nan can play along, or be the judge who says “that’s right” or “that never happened” on the big screen. If she says it never happened, nobody gets points for it.
Will family members see each other’s answers?
No. Each person gets a private link, and answers stay hidden until the game is played. Even you, the organiser, can keep the answers hidden so you can play too.
Where do the birth-year questions come from?
From Wikipedia’s “year in the United Kingdom” pages, credited on screen. The question only uses an event whose words appear on that page.
Why is it a monthly plan?
Most families play more than once: Christmas, then Nan’s birthday, Mother’s Day, an anniversary or Grandad’s turn. £7 a month covers unlimited games, and you can cancel any time from your account.
Is there a free try?
Yes: a free 5-question demo round you can play now without an account, and a 7-day free trial of the full plan with no card.
What happens to our family’s answers?
They’re used only to make your game. You can delete the game and every answer with one button. We delete a game ourselves 90 days after it’s played, unless you tick “Keep this game”.
What if someone hasn’t answered?
We email you a friendly nudge for anyone who hasn’t answered after two days, with a message ready to send them. The quiz is made as soon as everyone’s in, or two days before the game, with whatever answers you have.
Does the person who wrote a question get points for it?
No. When they join, players pick their name, and nobody scores on their own memory.
What the family answers
Each relative answers at least three of these on their phone, and can add a question only they could ask:
- What was Nan’s first job?
- What’s Nan’s signature dish?
- What does Nan always say?
- Where’s Nan’s favourite holiday spot?
- Which song gets Nan up dancing?
- What’s Nan’s favourite telly programme?
- What’s Nan’s funniest habit?
- What’s Nan’s favourite treat?
Claude, an AI by Anthropic, turns each answer into a multiple-choice question with three believable wrong answers and writes the host’s links between rounds. The right answer is always exactly what your relative typed.
The era round
Two rounds come from the year Nan was born and the year she turned 21. We read Wikipedia’s page for that year (for example “1948 in the United Kingdom”, the year London hosted the Olympics), keep a copy, and build questions only from the dated events on it. Each round credits the page on screen, under its CC BY-SA licence.
Playing on the TV
On the day, open your game page on a smart TV’s browser, or on a laptop plugged into the TV, and press “Play on the TV”. A code and a QR code appear; everyone scans it with their phone, picks their name and answers against a 20-second clock. Scores show after every round, and the fastest right answers score most.
Nan’s Number One
The winner is crowned on the big screen and gets a certificate you can download and send round the family.
Beyond Christmas
The same plan covers Nan’s birthday, Mother’s Day, a big anniversary, or Grandad’s turn. Make as many games as you like.
